  1. Epson Stylus Photo R380 Inkjet Printer
This printer has to be one of the greatest inventions ever. Forget trying to use messy CD/DVD labels. This printer prints directly on CDs and DVDs. It includes a special tray that feeds CDs and DVDs into the printer. It also includes software where you can design whatever you want printed on the CD/DVD. You can even print photos on the CD/DVD.
  2. Memorex DVD-R 16x 4.7GB 100 Pack Spindle Printable
You can’t have the Epson printer without printable DVDs. I prefer Memorex DVD-R for all my projects.
  3. The Little Digital Video Book
This is a great little book for the video editing hobbyist. It provides lots of great tips for shooting and editing video. I seem to refer to my book a lot.
  4. Canon ZR830 MiniDV Camcorder with 35x Optical Zoom
I’ve had great luck with Canon camcorders. I’ve been using the Canon ZR80 for the past few years and it still works like a charm. So I’m sure the ZR830 has got to be even better than mine. This little consumer camcorder has gotten some great reviews.
  5. Celestron Photo / Video Tripod
If you shoot a lot of video, then you definitely need a tripod like this one. There’s a huge selection of tripods on the market. I have one similar to this one. I also have a smaller version of this one that easily folds up small enough to fit into my camera bag.
  6. Canon PowerShot SD750 7.1MP Digital Elph Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Silver)
I bought this digital camera last month and have had so much fun with it. It’s very small and lightweight and takes some great pictures. When I’m out with my kids, I like to wear it around my neck or wrist so I don’t ever miss any photo opportunities. The zoom is not that great however. But I really don’t take many distant shots anyway. I usually take closeup shots of my kids. So it’s perfect for what I need it for.
  7. Canon CanoScan 4400F Color Image Scanner (1306B002)
This is a great little scanner that will scan your photos, 35 mm film, and slides.
  8. Apple iMac Desktop with 20″ Display MA876LL/A (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, SuperDrive)
I absolutey LOVE LOVE LOVE my iMac.
  9. Apple iLife ‘06 (Mac DVD) [OLDER VERSION]
Apple recently introduced iLife ‘08. However, I am not crazy about it because the completely revamped iMovie. iLife ‘06 includes the older version of iMovie which has lots of great themes and is so easy to use. With iLife ‘06, you also get iPhoto and iDVD.
  10. Adobe Premiere Elements 4
If you’re a PC user, then I recommend Adobe Premiere Elements for your video editing needs. I also have a copy of this on my laptop and have created some great home videos with it.
  11. Videomaker Magazine
This magazine is geared more towards the video professional. However, the video hobbyist can still get a lot of great information out of it. Oh how I wish someone would start a great magazine for the hobbyist…
  12. Israel Hyman of Izzy Video
Here you can find short, easy-to-understand video tutorials that show you how to shoot and edit better video.
  13. YouTube
Upload your videos for free and share them with friends and family around the world.

To my grandfather, father, uncles, nephew, friends, and all Veterans who have served our great country, I would like to say thank you. Thank you for giving us the freedom we have today. Not a day goes by without me thinking of the sacrifices you have made for our country. I am eternally grateful.

I found this excellent video on YouTube that says it all.

What Everyone Ought to Know about October 15

October 15, 2007 by Kim · 7 Comments

Bloggers Unite - Blog Action Day

Today, October 15, is Blog Action Day. Today bloggers around the world are uniting to put a single important issue on everyone’s mind—the environment. If each of us does our own small part, we will have a cleaner and healthier environment to live in.

Here’s a list of the top 10 ways I’ve helped Scrapbooks Alive go green:

  1. Replaced my desktop with a laptop.
  2. Set my screen saver to blank when not in use.
  3. Work with my lights off during the day and open my blinds for natural light.
  4. Use fluorescent lights when lights are needed.
  5. Turn on my ceiling fan and turn off the A/C.
  6. Use recycled paper.
  7. Recycle old ink catridges.
  8. Recyle my aluminum Coke cans. (That’s right. I’m an admitted Coke-a-holic. Who needs coffee when you can drink Coke!)
  9. Save my emails in appropriate folders rather than printing and filing them.
  10. Pay bills (ugggh!) online.

Many of my Mom Masterminds friends are also participating. Check them out:

What is a Video Scrapbook?

October 10, 2007 by Kim · 3 Comments

QAA Video Scrapbook tells a very personal story. It combines some very powerful media–video, photographs, memoriabilia, music, narration–into a priceless video that will be enjoyed by your friends and family for years to come.

A typical video scrapbook lasts from 5-15 minutes, has 1-5 pieces of music, video and photos, and a number of title pages and captions. Your video can also include narration.

Normally, the structure of the video scrapbook is as follows:

  • Title page introducing the video.
  • One to five chapters–each covering a different topic, time period, or theme. These chapters will be the “scenes” when you create a DVD.
  • End credits and/or a message.

Below is a legacy video I created about my great grandparents. It includes a title page introducing them, video captured from old 8MM film, old photographs that I scanned, music, and a Bible verse that ends the video. I created this video using iMovie.

Is iMovie ‘08 Really a Major Downgrade?

August 17, 2007 by Kim · 1 Comment

I’ve been reading a lot of the Mac forums this week to see what people think of the new iMovie ‘08. It seems that a majority of the users out there are completely disappointed in it. Apparently, instead of adding new features to the upgrade, Apple removed key features.

Here’s a list of things others are complaining about:

  • No timeline.
  • No video effects (except brightness, saturation, etc.).
  • No audio effects.
  • Fewer titles.
  • Fewer transitions.
  • No export functionality to iDVD.
  • Chapter markers were removed.
  • Themes were removed.
  • You can’t speed up/slow down clips.
  • You can’t extract audio from the video clips.
  • No plug in capability.
  • The list could go on and on. But I think you get the point. As of now, I’m not going to upgrade–or should I say downgrade. Like I said in my last post, once the Geniuses at my local Apple store figure out iMovie ‘08, I’ll go to one of their training sessions and then make my decision. I still love iMovie ‘06 and will continue to use it.

iMovie ‘08 — Deal or No Deal

    August 15, 2007 by Kim · Leave a Comment

iMovie ‘08 hit the shelves last week with a brand new look. They even changed the icon. Some of the new features include the ability to skim and select video the way text is selected, share movies anywhere with iTunes or a .Mac web gallery, easily upload to YouTube, and encode the movie in multiple resolutions.

I was excited to see the new iMovie so I dropped by my local Apple store yesterday for a demo. The store was packed. So I helped myself to one of the iMacs loaded with iMovie ‘08 to give it a test drive. I stumbled around the application for about 5 minutes until one of the Geniuses asked if I needed any help. I asked the Genius (and I use that term loosely) where the timeline was. He had no clue. He also couldn’t answer any of my other questions. He said that he had not had time to learn it and then he rushed off to teach his iMovie ‘06 class. As he was leaving, he said he personally did not like ‘08 right now and to ask him again next week after he’s had time to play with it.

I stayed there and tried to figure out how it worked. Another Genius must have noticed my frustration and came to see if I needed any help. He, too, could not answer any of my questions. I was very disappointed in the lack of help. iMovie ‘08 (iLife ‘08) is a huge part of Apple. I would have thought that all their Geniuses would be trained in it before now.

So, for now, I’m going to hang on to my $79. I plan to go back to the Apple store when they offer a class in iMovie ‘08.

So please tell me… Is iMovie ‘08 a Deal or No Deal?
