Is iMovie ‘08 Really a Major Downgrade?

August 17, 2007 by Kim · 1 Comment

I’ve been reading a lot of the Mac forums this week to see what people think of the new iMovie ‘08. It seems that a majority of the users out there are completely disappointed in it. Apparently, instead of adding new features to the upgrade, Apple removed key features.

Here’s a list of things others are complaining about:

  • No timeline.
  • No video effects (except brightness, saturation, etc.).
  • No audio effects.
  • Fewer titles.
  • Fewer transitions.
  • No export functionality to iDVD.
  • Chapter markers were removed.
  • Themes were removed.
  • You can’t speed up/slow down clips.
  • You can’t extract audio from the video clips.
  • No plug in capability.
  • The list could go on and on. But I think you get the point. As of now, I’m not going to upgrade–or should I say downgrade. Like I said in my last post, once the Geniuses at my local Apple store figure out iMovie ‘08, I’ll go to one of their training sessions and then make my decision. I still love iMovie ‘06 and will continue to use it.

iMovie ‘08 — Deal or No Deal

    August 15, 2007 by Kim · Leave a Comment

iMovie ‘08 hit the shelves last week with a brand new look. They even changed the icon. Some of the new features include the ability to skim and select video the way text is selected, share movies anywhere with iTunes or a .Mac web gallery, easily upload to YouTube, and encode the movie in multiple resolutions.

I was excited to see the new iMovie so I dropped by my local Apple store yesterday for a demo. The store was packed. So I helped myself to one of the iMacs loaded with iMovie ‘08 to give it a test drive. I stumbled around the application for about 5 minutes until one of the Geniuses asked if I needed any help. I asked the Genius (and I use that term loosely) where the timeline was. He had no clue. He also couldn’t answer any of my other questions. He said that he had not had time to learn it and then he rushed off to teach his iMovie ‘06 class. As he was leaving, he said he personally did not like ‘08 right now and to ask him again next week after he’s had time to play with it.

I stayed there and tried to figure out how it worked. Another Genius must have noticed my frustration and came to see if I needed any help. He, too, could not answer any of my questions. I was very disappointed in the lack of help. iMovie ‘08 (iLife ‘08) is a huge part of Apple. I would have thought that all their Geniuses would be trained in it before now.

So, for now, I’m going to hang on to my $79. I plan to go back to the Apple store when they offer a class in iMovie ‘08.

So please tell me… Is iMovie ‘08 a Deal or No Deal?

    Bluebonnets, Dinosaurs, and Sunshine

I put together this video montage this morning using some photos I took at Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, Texas. Once I uploaded the photos to my computer, it only took me about 30 minutes to create using iMovie on my iMac.

    Here’s what I did:

  • Created the opening using Themes.
  • Inserted the pictures I wanted to include.
  • Inserted “Cross Dissolve” transitions between each picture.
  • Created scrolling text at the end of the video using the Title option.
  • Inserted music from iLife Sound Effects in the Audio tab.
  • Selected Quicktime from the Share menu and compressed the video for streaming media.
  • Uploaded the video to YouTube.

    Snow Day in Texas

    January 19, 2007 by Kim · 1 Comment

My kids were excited when they woke up Wednesday morning to find the ground covered (well… slightly covered) in snow. School was officially cancelled for the day!

So I bundled them up, grabbed my video camera, and off we went. They made snow angels, broke icicles off their Dad’s car, and had a big snow ball fight. Life was good.

I got some great shots. (Some weren’t so great because my hand was shaking because I was so cold. Where was my tripod?) After about 20 minutes of filming, I uploaded the video to my iMac and started editing it with iMovie. Then, I posted my 2 minute video on YouTube so our friends and family could share in their fun.

Here’s my final creation. It’s definitely not a professional job… but who cares. It’s a video that our family will treasure for years to come.

Example of iSight Time Lapse Feature

    December 28, 2006 by Kim · 2 Comments

I created a Christmas video using the iSight camera on my Apple iMac desktop. I then edited it in iMovie. It only took me about 30 minutes to edit this project.

Here’s how to create a time lapse video.

    To record the video:

    1. Open iMovie.
    2. Click the camera icon (below the viewing area) and select Time Lapse.
    3. Click the Capture 1 Frame For Every ## Frames of Video check box.
    4. In the ## area, select the appropriate number. For my video, I selected 20
    5. Click OK.
    6. With the camera icon selected, select Record With iSight. The camera will start recording.
    7. When you are ready to stop recording, click Record With iSight again.

    To add a title:

    1. Select the Editing button.
    2. In the top area, select the type of title you want to use.
    3. In the text area, type the text for your title.
    4. Click Add.

    To add a voiceover:

    1. Go to the part of the video for which you want to add a voiceover.
    2. Click the Media button.
    3. To start recording, click the red circle.
    4. Start talking, singing, etc.
    5. To stop recording, click the red circle again.

The time lapse feature can be a lot of fun. Just use your imagination and you can come up with some great videos. You can set it up to record at your next party, sporting event, etc. If you have any more suggestions on how to use the time lapse feature, please leave a comment.
